President Tsai Ing-wen attended an event marking Holocaust Remembrance Day April 17 in Taipei City, reiterating Taiwan’s commitment to working with global partners to safeguard human rights and democracy for future generations.
 
The event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, German Institute Taipei and Taiwan Foundation for Democracy. Those in attendance included Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, ISECO Rep. Maya Yaron, GIT Director General Jörg Polster and Knesset Taiwan friendship group Chair Boaz Toporovsky.
 
The president thanked participants for attending the event to remember those who lost their lives in the Holocaust, pay tribute to the survivors and acknowledge the suffering of all affected by the tragedy.
 
This dark chapter of human history must never be forgotten, and the fight against discrimination and bigotry can never stop while people continue to suffer under authoritarian regimes and dictatorships, Tsai said. The world can learn from Israel’s work to preserve historical accounts of the Holocaust and Germany’s courage to face the past, she added.
 
The Taiwan government has rolled out a raft of measures to address the injustices of the past and uncover the truth of atrocities that occurred during the authoritarian era, Tsai said, citing government bodies and regulatory amendments initiated to pursue transitional justice, as well as collaboration with Israel on various workshops and events to raise awareness of the Holocaust.
 
At the same time, Taiwan has been working with global partners to enhance religious freedom, fight discrimination and promote equality, Tsai said. Unity is critical to combating hatred and forging understanding amid the growing threats of terrorism and authoritarianism, she added. (SFC-E)
