Former governor of Imo State Emeka Ihedioha has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after 26 years.
Ihedioha announced his exit from PDP in a Tuesday letter addressed to the party’s chairman in the Mbutu Ward of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.
According to him, the PDP has taken on a path that is at variance with his personal beliefs.
“Despite my attempt to offer counsel, the party is, sadly no longer able to carry out internal reforms, enforce its own rules, or offer credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress,” Ihedioha said.
“It is in the light of the foregoing, that I am compelled to offer my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party effective immediately.”

He described the decision as a difficult one but the right thing to do.
Ihedioha added that despite this resignation, he will always be available to offer his services towards the deepening of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.
In 2019, Ihedioha contested for the governorship seat for Imo State on the platform of the PDP.
He was declared governor-elect on 11 March 2019, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after he defeated Uche Nwosu (son-in-law of the incumbent governor) who ran under the Action Alliance Party (AA), with a total of 273,404 votes.
However, Ihedioha was removed from office on 14 January 2020 by a Supreme Court judgment that pronounced APC’s Hope Uzodinma as governor of Imo State.
