The police in Baranya County dismantled a criminal organization specializing in obtaining bank card data, fraud and money laundering, with the fraudsters causing at least 76 account holders a total of more than HUF 200 million in damage, according to profitline.hu.
The perpetrators pretended to be bank employees and called people, saying that to secure their money, they needed their bank card and account data and to change their card limit.
The victims provided their bank account access data and downloaded the remote access program. With the obtained data, the gang members made internet purchases and transferred money to accounts opened for this purpose.
Béla Harmati, the county’s deputy criminal police chief, announced the details of the investigation at a press conference in Pécs: the court has now arrested three leaders of the gang, two foreigners and one Hungarian, and 11 more suspects are free to defend themselves.
