Haiti is reeling from its most violent period on record, with a staggering 53 percent increase in casualties compared to previous reporting periods, according to data from the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH). The alarming statistics revealed during a Security Council briefing on April 22, have sparked urgent appeals for international assistance to address the deepening crisis.
“Some of the worst scenarios for Haiti have become realities in recent months and weeks,” said María Isabel Salvador, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Haiti, who delivered a sobering assessment of the situation. She described the recent months as marked by unprecedented levels of violence. She emphasized that the surge in casualties underscores the urgent need for immediate action to prevent further bloodshed and restore stability.
