Mayor Mark Sutcliffe should be ready to move on to official city business after completing his controversial run in the London, England Marathon Sunday.

On X, formerly Twitter, the mayor wrote: “What a great day running the @LondonMarathon! ! Thanks to all the Ottawa residents who encouraged me and wished me good luck over the past few weeks. Congratulations to all the other runners from Ottawa who participated today!”

Sutcliffe encountered a fair bit of flak earlier this month, particularly on social media, when it was announced that he would attend a trade mission to London, England, where he would also be running in the marathon.

The mayor posted on social media that he would join officials from Ottawa Tourism and Invest Ottawa for a “quick but busy and impactful trip.”

“There’s a huge opportunity here to promote Ottawa as a tourist destination,” Sutcliffe said at the time.

Sutcliffe insisted that any expenses related to the marathon will be paid for out of his own pocket.

Ottawa Tourism later confirmed it had invited Sutcliffe on the trip, “which will allow for him to engage directly with key stakeholders through targeted meetings and networking opportunities.”

Ottawa Tourism will also be paying for Sutcliffe’s travel and accommodation expenses.

Sutcliffe also joined Ottawa Tourism on another trade mission to Paris last June.

Kenyan runners took first place in both the men’s and women’s events.

Olympic gold medallist Peres Jepchirchir set a world record for a women-only marathon with a time of two hours, 16 minutes, 16 seconds.

Her countryman, Alexander Mutiso Munyao, in his first major marathon event with a time of two hours, four minutes and one second.
